| Qinetiq
at the MOD Aberporth is one of the country's providers of engineering traineeships.
Formerly known as DERA, it offers specialist training in welding as well
as machining, fitting, electronics and fabrication. For its welding courses,
which provide specialist skills leading to the award of an NVQ foundation
level two, it has standardised on Murex and ESAB equipment. Qinetiq teaches students looking to embark upon a career that embraces welding using all the basic techniques. These include welding to a good standard using MIG, MMA, TIG and oxy-acetylene equipment. This covers instruction on how to weld several joints in various material thicknesses in different positions. To fulfil these needs Qinetiq has various Murex MIG, TIG and MMA welding sets including several Tradesmigs and Industrial MIG machines. For gas welding training, the organisation has standardised on Murex Saffire products whilst consumables in use include Murex Bostrand LW1 MIG wire and ESAB OK Mildtrode MMA electrodes. The latest acquisition is the ESAB Aristo 320, which provides a choice of MIG/MAG, MMA, DC-TIG or carbon arc gouging. All the Murex and ESAB equipment is purchased through their local distributor Grainger Tubolt, Pembroke Dock, who they find both extremely helpful and supportive. According to Rob Morgan, Deputy Facilities Manager at Qinetiq, the Murex and ESAB products provide a level of robustness and quality which is essential in the training environment. The equipment is also reliable and user friendly, important for youngsters taking their first steps in welding. "We have also been delighted with the service provided including the friendly, professional instruction provided when taking delivery and commissioning a new machine," he says. Qinetiq provides essential grounding for tomorrow's welding engineers. It also allows delegates to follow off the job training at a local college in Cardigan where courses such as the City and Guilds Basic Engineering and BTEC National Certificate in Engineering are available. It is refreshing to know that some of the best welding equipment currently available is being used in such a high quality learning environment. |
